Appendix 17B : Manchester City Nursery Places Review 1989

Gresty Nursery School (Wythenshawe).

60 places. On the same site as Peel Hall Primary school which had no nursery class.

Proposal:   Closure and establish 60 nursery class places within the Peel Hall school building.

Decision:   Proposals agreed but to be implemented 12 months later (from 1/9/99). Also additional resources to be provided for 3 year olds.

Barnes Green Nursery and Assessment Centre (Harpurhey).

80 places plus 30 places in assessment centre. Located near to Harpur Mount Primary school which had no nursery class.

Proposal:   Convert to nursery classes for Harpur Mount school. Transfer management responsibility (and budget) for the assessment centre to Harpur Mount school.

Decision:   Proposals agreed but to be implemented 12 months later (from 1/9/99).

Mayfair Nursery School. (Wythenshawe).

40 places.

Proposal:   Closure and establish 60 additional nursery class places at Crossacres Primary (30) and Woodhouse Park Primary (30), although these schools some distance away. The 3 nearest Primary schools already had large nursery classes (210 places in total).

Decision:   Closure agreed, but to be implemented 12 months later (from 1/9/99). Additional nursery places to be at Crossacres Primary (30), Rackhouse (15), and Royal Oak (15).

Ancoats Nursery School.

60 places.

Proposal:   Keep open but change the age range from 2 – 5 to 3 – 5 and expand to 75 places and eventually create extended day-care provision.

Decision:   Proposals agreed but additional resources to be provided for 3 year olds (by grant funding community initiatives).

Collyhurst Nursery School.

90 places.

Proposal:   Keep open but change the age range from 2 – 5 to 3 – 5 and eventually create extended day-care provision.

Decision:   Proposals agreed but additional resources to be provided for 3 year olds (by grant funding community initiatives).

Shakespeare Nursery School (Ardwick).

90 places.

Proposal:   Closure and establish 45 additional nursery class places at St Chrysostom’s Primary (15), Plymouth Grove (15) and Armitage (45).

Decision:   Closure agreed, but to be implemented 12 months later (from 1/9/99). Establish 55 additional nursery class places at St Chrysostom’s Primary (15), Plymouth Grove (15), St Luke’s (15) and Medlock (10).

Martenscroft Nursery School (Hulme).

90 places.

Proposal:   Reduce the number of nursery class places to 60, transfer in 50 day-care places from closure of Rutland day nursery (creating a combined care and education centre), and establish 45 additional nursery class places at Royce Primary (15), Webster (15) and Princess (15).

Decision:   Proposals agreed, but additional 15 places at St Phillip’s CE rather than Princess.

City wide:

Proposal:   Create 100 Additional Nursery Places at Abbott Primary school (15), Bank Meadow Primary school (15), Temple Infants school (15), Cheetwood Primary school (15), Old Moat Primary school (10), Heald Place Primary school (15), Wilbraham Primary school (15).

Decision:   Proposals agreed, but instead of 15 places at Abbott and Bank Meadow, 15 to be created at Lily Lane Infants and Abbey Hey Infants.
